Two stylish Balconette balustrades have ‘transformed’ a 1970s home in Kent with an updated appearance that lifts it ‘from the 20th century into the 21st’, according to the man who installed them.
Kristian Diprose, owner of construction company KA Diprose Ltd, installed Balconette’s rounded Orbit Balustrade System with a handrail in the matt Silver Anodised finish on the detached property in Kingsdown for homeowner Peter Edwardes.
The straight and curved glass balustrades replace the original wrought iron railings on the 1974 ‘Spanish-style’ house, as Peter explains: “Over the years, the balcony, which was sited over the double garage deteriorated, began to let in water and the railings rusted. I was forced to consider a major repair or replacement.
“Because of the superb views I have over the channel to Calais, I decided to consider glass balustrades which have been used on a number of local properties.”
Kristian says the original plan was to replace the iron railings on top of the repaired balcony deck: “Then I suddenly had a brainwave one day and thought, this seems crazy. Why don’t you use glass because everybody seems to be having glass near the coast?”
Having been recommended Balconette by his local window company, Kristian put together a proposal for his client, continuing: “I worked out that I could fit the Balconette balustrades for the same price as railings. Using glass meant that he wouldn’t have the wind blowing in between the railings providing shelter, he would still have his view and it would update the property too.”
Peter says Balconette was suggested as “being ideal for my type of property and budget. Their brochure was also very helpful in reaching my decision.”
Kristian found Balconette’s technical advice ‘very helpful’, especially as he had not used their balustrading system before. “It was the first time, and hopefully not the last time. As a first-time user, we learned a lot from installing the system and I’d like to do more of these balustrades.
“The finished job was excellent, I was very pleased, and the client was absolutely over the moon with it. The curved glass fitted perfectly on the separate balcony in front of the new French Doors.”
On what the new Balconette balustrades bring to the project, Kristian adds: “They have transformed the property and updated it to reflect today’s balcony. They have brought it from the 20th century into the 21st century.”
Peter says he is ‘very satisfied’ with the balustrades, adding: “I am particularly pleased at their ability to remain clear and clean after being battered by strong winds and rain. The neighbours have admired them and think that they add to the appearance of the house.”
