Taking his inspiration from a Spanish hotel’s outdoor terrace, John Lane has added a Mediterranean vibe to his home renovation project with a stylish Balconette tinted glass balustrade.
Nearly nine metres of Balconette’s Orbit System support toughened grey tinted glass panels to enclose a new composite decking area. The handrail matches the posts and base track in a Silver anodised finish.
When John retired, the property was remodelled with a refitted kitchen and two sets of bifold doors which lead onto the newly created terrace. “We wanted to create an indoor/outdoor space and then put the balustrade around the edge to frame the area. It’s worked tremendously well,” he says.
A former chartered surveyor, John says he had an idea of what he wanted and how it would look. Having done some internet research, Balconette’s product “just ticked all the boxes”.
“It was about the aesthetics of it and the balustrade created the framework for the lawned area and different patios. It was exactly what we needed,” he continues. “Having seen something similar that framed a sun lounging area at a Tenerife hotel we stayed at, we wanted to create that theme; to bring the Mediterranean to Leicestershire.”
Despite a supply issue with the casing covers, which was rectified in 24 hours, the balustrade was installed in two days by Balconette’s registered partner, East Midlands Fabrications in March 2022.
“I found it reassuring that Balconette could recommend an installer and I was very impressed with them. They knew what they were doing and worked quickly and very well.”
Having specified Balconette’s BalcoNano® self-cleaning glass coating, John has noticed that it has made a difference in keeping the glass panels cleaner for longer. Another benefit of the glass balustrade is the protection provided on breezier days. “It does create a very sheltered sunbathing area on windier days.”
On the finished result, John adds: “It’s basically a low-maintenance system, plus it’s really modernised the property and created a Mediterranean feel. It’s great for social gatherings as we can open the two sets of bi-fold doors and it’s literally a walk-round space.”
