What is the Weight of the SG12, Fully Frameless Balustrade per metre?

An unimpeded view with no distraction or interruption of your view from posts or a handrail: that’s the instant attraction of our Fully Frameless SG12 balustrade.
The balustrade can be fitted below the surface level of the balcony floor to project upward with stunning clean lines or the sturdy base track can be mounted above the finished floor level and clearly mark the boundaries of your balcony, finished in gleaming Royal Chrome or the understated appeal of Matt Silver Anodised.
So, you’ve decided that the structural glass system of SG12 Frameless is ideal for your unique balcony. It’s clear to point out at first that this is exactly as it says on the tin: a structural glass solution (guess what SG stands for!) and differs from our Hybrid® balustrade designs as there is no handrail to provide the structural strength and support.
This entails that the glass panels themselves must be thicker than the standard 10mm glass in our Hybrid® balustrade systems. In fact the SG12 Frameless system utilises the inherent strength and integrity of 21.5mm laminated and toughened glass in combination with the system’s structural base track. Its advantages are that it can stand alone as a unique barrier to the elements and withstand loads and forces yet all that added strength and robustness means that the glass must also be thicker, and this is achieved by sandwiching two 10mm glass panels with a membrane layer in between to achieve the required rigidity and stability.
Is it so Heavy that I Need a Team of Workers?
The simple answer is that the heavier weight of the laminated Fully Frameless panels are still designed to be managed by a small team of installers. How small? Well many of our customers manage with just a team of 2 people so you may want to rope in a friend and promise them a summer of outdoor entertainment and fine dining if they can help you erect the balustrade according to the carefully drafted plans. Alternatively a qualified builder can take the load off your back and complete the installation, inch-perfect to your specifications (actually all measurements will be in centimetres).
The typical weight per metre of our SG-12 system is around 75 kg per linear metre. This weight consists of the main elements: the aluminium base track at around 13kg per metre and the toughened, laminated glass at 60 kg per metre. There is also the accessory box that will be added to the consignment for delivery and this will typically add 2kg to the over-all package. If you chose to add a lightweight ornamental handrail this will add a little more too but is negligible compared to our Hybrid® system handrails.
Can my existing balcony structure take the weight?
Our technical team will provide structural calculations, ideally designed for the balustrade to mount onto a surface of steel or cast concrete. It can also be fitted to timber, though this will require the distance between fixing centres to be minimised to provide the necessary resistance to leaning forces, movement and wind load.
Sturdy and strong, even without a handrail
But, we hear you ask “surely double thickness toughened glass and a firm base track will add to the over-all weight of my balustrade?” and the answer certainly won’t upset your previous notion of physics – yes it does increase the weight and this is the reassuringly sturdy (yet heavier) quality of a structural glass system.
Rest assured, we will ensure your balcony meets the specifications for the magnificent new frameless balustrade and the resilience and elegance of the finished system will persuade you that weight concerns are no object to ordering, delivering, installing and celebrating a new freedom with an all-glass solution.
