Does Having a Glass Pool Fence Mean Endless Cleaning?
Glass pool fences are one of the best ways to combine style and safety. But how do you go about cleaning the glass and will it mean endless cleaning?
Three ways to keep your glass pool fence looking at its best.
There are a few options available to you and all of them are pleasingly straightforward.
1. The DIY method for keeping your glass pool fence clean
First, get the right equipment
To keep your glass pool fence looking at its sparkly best, you’ll need the right equipment. Even if you don’t already have the necessary bits and pieces, they’re available at almost any supermarket or hardware store.
You’ll need:
- A hose pipe.
- A clean bucket or washing up bowl.
- Sponge or microfibre cloth – the type you wash a car with, not an abrasive sponge that you’d use for cleaning pots and pans.
- Washing-up liquid. Nothing fancy needed here, just the detergent you use to do your dishes with. Because you’re using it outside and it could splash onto plants, you might prefer to use a detergent with ecological credentials.
- A squeegee.
- Dry microfibre or lint-free cotton cloth. A clean tea-towel is ideal.
Keep it simple
Because the dirt on your glass pool fence will include grit and dust, it’s important to follow these steps to prevent the build-up from scratching your glass fencing. We’d recommend you stay away from specialist glass cleaners because they can leave smears on the glass and – especially with spray cleaners – they don’t always end up on the glass, instead spraying you as well as nearby wildlife and plants.
- Hose down your glass fences with cold water to wash away the surface grit. Do not use a pressure-washer; a gentle flow of water is best.
- Mix some detergent into a bucket of warm water, and then use your sponge to wipe the panels, posts and handrails clean with the bubbly water.
- Get your hose out again and rinse off the bubbles and dirt you’ve loosened.
- Squeegee the clean water off your glass panels and then polish any final smears with your dry cloth.
- Use your dry cloth to shine up the handrails and posts and polish away any final smears.
Do it regularly
Cleaning your glass pool fence regularly, every two months or so, is the best way to keep it looking at its sparkling best. Leaving it as an annual job will mean the dust and grime builds up to the extent that cleaning becomes an arduous task. It will also leave your beautiful glass panels looking dull and unloved instead of clear and sleek.
2. Use a self-cleaning glass coating to make life simple
Even though cleaning glass pool fences is a straightforward task, you can make it even easier by coating your glass with a self-cleaning coating such as BalcoNano®. The self-cleaning coating works by filling the microscopic pits and grooves on the surface of the glass and creating a perfectly smooth surface. This means that instead of lodging in these microscopic cavities, dust and dirt gets washed off the glass whenever it rains. If it’s a dry summer, you can imitate nature by rinsing off the dust with a hose pipe or watering can. Wondering how you can get this coating added to your glass panels? We can apply BalcoNano® to glass panels during manufacture for a small additional cost, or you can apply it yourself to an existing glass pool fence.

3. Get the professionals in to clean your glass pool fence
Chances are, you already have a window cleaner who cleans the windows on your house. Glass fence panels are just as easy for a professional to clean – possibly easier because they’re more accessible. So why not ask your window cleaner to add your glass pool fence onto their task list?
