One question we often get asked by prospective balustrade purchasers is ‘are glass railings expensive?’ Although this can be a tricky question to answer, as every balustrade is as individual as the location where it’s to be installed, we will try to explain some general pricing guidelines.

With most of us having spent more time at home in recent months, many thoughts have turned to home improvements. And installing a balcony is a popular project to add value, create more space and let in more light, while opening up views to the outside.

Purchasing a glass balustrade is a long-term investment, so it pays to get it right. Below are some factors to bear in mind.

Are glass railings expensive?

Not necessarily. Glass railings systems differ in construction, appearance, and therefore price. So, it depends on what you are comparing your balustrading choice to and the other options available. For example, some prefabricated component systems use clamps to secure the glass panels in place. Depending on your preference, this can interrupt the aesthetics, even when we're talking about Patio railings.

Although perhaps cost-effective in the short term, stainless-steel and glass balustrades can also require regular posts and clamps to support the glass panels.

Size and design of your glass balustrade

Every project is different and therefore the cost of glass railings varies according to the style, size and complexity of your glass balustrade. For example, Balconette’s popular Aerofoil Glass Balustrade System with its distinctive wing-shaped handrail, and Orbit Glass Balustrade System permit different design configurations to suit personal tastes, project requirements and budgets.

For longer runs of glass, support posts may be required that will influence the final cost. But with the Aerofoil Balustrade system running an impressive four metres without posts (when fixed wall to wall), this allows for a balcony without any posts at all.

Orbit Glass Balustrade

If you are considering a glass balustrade, Balconette’s 3D Balustrade designer tool enables you to see an instant 3D model of your design. Or you can use this to complete your design and send your balustrade order direct to manufacture. You can design your own balustrade to suit the exact sizes, angles, and shape of the balcony or terrace that you have.

Handrail or frameless balustrade system

Frameless glass balustrades, such as Balconette’s SG12 Frameless balustrade system, are structurally self-supporting. While they do not depend on a handrail for strength, this can be added according to personal preference. Glass balustrade prices for the Aerofoil and Orbit systems start in the region of £200 + VAT per metre. Frameless systems require thicker laminated glass and a strengthened underlying support structure and cost more for a structural solution.

The advantages are there are no limits to the width of the balcony, and no handrails or supports to block the view. Plus, the only maintenance required is an occasional cleaning of the glass.

On-going maintenance costs

Whatever your choice of balustrading - glass, wood, wrought iron or steel - maintenance expenses are a key factor to bear in mind. Due to their corrosion-resistance, glass and aluminium railings are virtually maintenance-free, versus the time and expense required in treating timber, iron or steel railings.

To keep glass balustrade panels clearer for longer, you can add the optional BalcoNano® self-cleaning glass coating. This invisible protection for the glass keeps it cleaner by repelling mineral deposits and rainwater faster.

Should I self-install?

Some Balconette customers have fitted their glass balustrades, which helps to save on the overall cost of the project. Others have engaged a local builder. Alternatively, there may be a Balconette registered installer in your area who we can recommend to you.

So, are glass railings expensive? Like any quality home improvement product, they are designed for longevity and to fulfil a purpose, while enhancing your living space.

You will be looking at, and through your glass balustrade every day for as long as you live in your home. So, it pays to choose the right balustrade with the right options from the outset and maximise your enjoyment of the view.
